Mark Henry who is accused of murdering 68-y-o Surjideo Deochand aka “Sarjee” a pensioner of Number 3 Village West Coast Berbice last Friday, made his first court appearance on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrate Court. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Henry who is the brother of slain Joel Henry, was represented by attorney at law Nigel Hughes and was remanded to prison until April, 28th, 2021.
Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Henry after he became the prime suspect in the matter. He subsequently turned himself over to police in the company of a lawyer after which his brother Hencosey Henry told ranks that his brother told him he murdered Deochand in the act of revenge.
According to reports, Henconsey was interrogated by CID Officers. He said that his brother, Mark Henry, was behaving badly on the day in question, he was throwing bricks at the dead man’s house while being armed with a cutlass. Mark Henry and Deochand are neighbors.
Deochand, was killed on Tuesday at about 17:00. He was living alone in a two-story wooden house in an unfenced yard.
According to Kamala Persaud, a niece of the deceased, who also lives in Number 3 Village, said that around 17:00 hrs on the day in question, she was standing on the public road with her son when they were told that someone had chopped ‘Sarjie’ and they must take him to the hospital. As a result, Persaud and other relatives went to the house where they saw Deochand lying on the ground in the lower flat of his house in a pool of blood.
They made an alarm and summoned the police. A party of policemen immediately responded and saw Deochand lying in a pool of blood. The ranks escorted him to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced ‘dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
One wound was seen on his left side face, one to the back of his head, one on his left side hand (wrist area), and one on the right hand (three fingers completely chopped off).
