…Said many distribution persons are “PPP agents”
Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Harmon, today bombarded the PPP/C government with a whirlwind of criticism, over the distribution of the COVID-19 cash grant.
Speaking at a virtual press conference, he labelled the COVID-19 cash grant a “tragedy.”
His determination came from reports of many persons claiming to not have been given the $25,000 grant, approved by Parliament for each household.
He said “thousands of households are being overlooked and bypassed.” He claimed that many have complained that no money was given to them, despite distribution agents have been in the area they reside or in some cases their neighbours received.
Harmon went further to label most of the persons distributing the grant as “PPP agents.”
He then affirmed that every household must receive the cash grant, calling for th PPP/C government “must stop the discriminatory act.”
The Leader of the Opposition also criticized the Auditor General, Deodat Sharma, for failing to convey, the start date of the audit of the COVID-19 fund. President, Dr Irfaan Ali had instructed the AG to conduct an audit of the grant but Harmon is disheartened that there has been no public announcement by the AG.
The $25,000 cash grant is the brainchild of President Dr Ali, in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic which virtually crippled the economy in the first half of 2020. The grant is to ensure persons have more spending power and it will also stimulate the economy by sparking economic activity.
